Building a Smart Platform

Realize system integration, help the development of the pathology department

The Second Affiliated Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine, founded in 1869, is one of the birthplaces of Western medicine in China, the birthplace of Western medicine in Zhejiang Province, and the first tertiary-level hospital in the country. It has been ranked among the top 10 tertiary-level public hospitals in the country in terms of performance assessment for five consecutive years, and the 8th in the country in the Chinese Hospital Ranking (Fudan Edition) in 2023. The Department of Pathology of ZJU is the first unit in China to apply digital pathology technology to carry out remote consultation with famous foreign pathology departments, with the volume of tissue biopsy reaching 223,000 in 2023 and the total number of working cases reaching 720,000.

In order to adapt to the next generation of diagnostic pathology requirements, KFBIO joins hands with the Department of Pathology of The Second Affiliated Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine to build the Digital Pathology Cloud Platform, which integrates the Pathology Information System, Remote Consultation, Scientific Research/AI System, Teaching and Training System, etc., and connects multiple hospitals to realize the convenient operation of logging into multiple hospital systems with one account, to build the Digital Intelligence Department of Pathology and to promote the discipline’s development.

KFBIO has built a digital information-based intelligent pathology cloud platform for the hospital. This platform integrates the pathology information system, remote consultation, scientific research/AI system, teaching and training system, etc. It connects multiple branch hospitals and realizes the convenient operation of logging into multiple hospital systems with one account.

We also cooperated to build a full-process information management system which integrates multi-branch hospitals, covering multiple branch hospitals in different districts. The system has the advantages of integration of management in multiple branch hospitals, closed-loop tracking of the whole process of samples, refined management of the whole process of patients, management of critical values, fee management, and paperless borrowing and returning of wax blocks/slides.

Promoting digital diagnosis

Enhance medical efficiency and optimize the diagnosis and treatment experience

Through the digital pathology cloud platform, the hospital breaks the boundaries of time and space, solves the problems of cross-hospital diagnosis and off-site travel consultation, and greatly improves the timeliness of pathology diagnosis and off-site consultation. It also achieves the management and diagnosis of slides of multiple branch hospitals, both in-hospital and out-of-hospital, to improve the work efficiency. At present, Chengdong hospital of The Second Affiliated Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine has completed the full digital slides scanning, and the storage reaches 1PB/year, and the preliminary research results show that the digital diagnosis time of routine pathology is 0.71 days faster than that before, and the digital consultation process of lymphoma cases is 43.8% faster than that of the traditional consultation, which effectively improves the efficiency of the department and the data of quality control and produces a great positive effect on the hospital’s operation and benefit. It has a great positive effect on the operation and benefit of the hospital.

The director of the Department of Pathology of the hospital said that with the help of the whole process information system and digital diagnosis, no matter in China or abroad on business trips, pathologists can carry out consultations and issue reports, realizing the fine management of the patient, and even decide whether the patient can view the report.

The director also mentioned that the on-line of the new pathology system has strengthened the node control of the process, especially the specimen delivery link, which realizes the specimen off-body scanning and ensures the specimen fixation rate index data is real, and meanwhile realizes the complete automation in the fee charging link, which greatly reduces the staff’s work intensity, achieves the higher quality of fine management and reduces the operation and manpower cost.
