Case Study: Tongji Hospital — Advancing Smart Pathology Research and AI Diagnosis with KFBIO

By Published On: 11/07/2025

Background

The Pathology Research Institute of Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is a national key discipline under China’s Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission.
As the Hubei Provincial Center for Clinical Pathology Quality Control, the institute handles over 3 million pathology slides per year and focuses on cutting-edge pathology research, education, and AI-assisted diagnosis.

Project Overview

To modernize its digital pathology infrastructure and enable high-efficiency research collaboration, Tongji Hospital partnered with KFBIO to establish a comprehensive digital pathology and AI diagnostic platform, integrating scanning, data management, and online teaching applications.

Key Achievements

1. Digital Pathology Scanning Cluster

A total of six high-performance KFBIO digital slide scanners were deployed, forming a hybrid matrix for both routine clinical pathology and advanced research:

  • 1 High-throughput brightfield scanner: processes up to 1,200 slides per batch for large-scale digitization.
  • 4 Standard brightfield scanners: used for clinical diagnosis, academic research, and remote consultation.
  • 1 Advanced fluorescence scanner: supports tumor microenvironment analysis and molecular pathology research with high-resolution imaging, enabling quantitative analysis of cellular and biomarker expressions.

2. Multi-Modal AI Diagnostic Network

A multi-organ AI network was established to cover hematopathology, gastric tissue, thyroid FNA, and biopsy quality control.
By integrating into the “AI + Pathologist Co-Development” model, the system provides a full-process AI-assisted diagnostic framework that enhances diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency, and quality assurance.

3. Digital Pathology Platform Integration

Tongji Hospital built a centralized digital pathology platform that supports online access for slide classification, group teaching, and research sharing across departments.
This platform serves as a collaborative base for pathology education, remote consultation, and interdisciplinary data integration, supporting both internal teaching and clinical collaboration for complex cases.

Outcome

Through its collaboration with KFBIO, Tongji Hospital successfully established an intelligent, research-oriented digital pathology ecosystem, covering digitization, AI-assisted diagnosis, and education.
The project enhances data-driven research efficiency, enables remote multidisciplinary consultation, and lays a strong foundation for precision pathology and smart hospital innovation.
