Case Study: National Telemedicine Center of China — Building a Regional Telepathology Consultation Network with KFBIO

By Published On: 11/12/2025

Background

The National Telemedicine Center of China, formerly the Henan Provincial Telemedicine Center, was officially approved by the Henan Health Commission in December 2010 as one of China’s earliest provincial-level telemedicine institutions.
Based at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, the center now serves as a national hub for pathology consultation, quality control, and continuing medical education.

Challenges

  • Limited Pathology Resources: Diagnostic capacity at county and grassroots hospitals remained insufficient, and a pathologist shortage hindered timely consultations.
  • Weak Connectivity: Remote consultation relied on manual coordination and lacked unified digital platforms.
  • Quality Gaps: Grassroots pathology service quality and data management were inconsistent, hindering large-scale collaboration.

Solutions

1. Digital Infrastructure Deployment

KFBIO provided a full digital pathology solution, deploying over 130 digital pathology slide scanners across county and city-level hospitals within Henan Province.
This established the foundation for a province-wide remote pathology network.

2. Telepathology Consultation Platform

A centralized digital teleconsultation system was built to support:

  • Online collaboration among specialists and partner hospitals
  • MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) teleconferences
  • Remote expert guidance and AI-assisted review
  • Joint diagnostic sessions, digital sign-offs, and education-based case sharing

This system now enables real-time expert collaboration across the province and neighboring regions.

3. Regional Training & Guidance

Through the telepathology network, regular training and mentoring sessions are held for local pathologists, enhancing diagnostic capability and technical proficiency at the grassroots level.

4. Frozen Section & Rapid Diagnosis

Remote frozen section support was implemented using KFBIO’s high-speed scanners, providing real-time intraoperative consultation and improving surgical efficiency.

5. Data Security and Standardization

All data are managed within an encrypted and standardized system, ensuring secure handling of patient information and traceable digital workflows.

Results & Benefits

  • 12,000+ complex pathology consultations per year handled through the telepathology center
  • ~100 MDT joint consultations per day with hospitals across Henan Province
  • 300,000+ healthcare personnel trained through continuing medical education programs
  • Regional coverage expanded to Henan, Shanxi, Xinjiang, Sichuan, and Yunnan Provinces

The system has significantly enhanced regional pathology capacity and accelerated the standardization of diagnostic services nationwide.

Outcome

With KFBIO’s digital pathology and teleconsultation platform, the National Telemedicine Center of China has successfully created a large-scale, connected telepathology ecosystem.
The project bridges expertise gaps between top hospitals and county-level facilities, providing equitable access to high-quality pathology diagnosis, education, and data management.
