Background

Yancheng Maternity and Child Health Hospital is a Class-A tertiary maternal and child health institution serving over 5 million residents across Yancheng and surrounding areas.
It is recognized as a regional cervical cancer prevention and control center, undertaking large-scale public health screening and medical training programs for women’s health.

Challenges

  • High Disease Burden: Yancheng has a 10.15% HPV infection rate (≈246,900 cases), creating a heavy screening workload.
  • Manual Screening Bottlenecks: Cytology screening required large manpower resources, and accuracy varied by operator.
  • Limited Specialist Access: Grassroots hospitals lacked pathologists and cytotechnologists, slowing diagnosis turnaround.
  • Workflow Inefficiency: Manual slide evaluation, result entry, and data reporting created fragmentation and delays.

Solutions

To address these challenges, KFBIO partnered with the hospital to establish an AI-based Cervical Cancer Prevention and Diagnosis Center, integrating AI cytology analysis, digital pathology, and cloud data management into a unified workflow.

  1. AI-Assisted Screening System
    • Deployed KFBIO’s intelligent cytology analysis platform across 17 affiliated hospitals.
    • Automated pre-screening and lesion detection significantly reduce the manual workload.
  2. Centralized Digital Management
    • Established a central diagnosis and data-sharing center, enabling remote slide review and expert validation.
    • Achieved full traceability from sample collection to diagnosis.
  3. Training & Technology Support
    • Conducted training for local cytologists and clinicians to ensure smooth AI adoption.
    • Promoted regional standardization of cervical cancer screening workflows.

Results & Benefits

  • AI-Driven Efficiency:
The AI platform enabled automatic triage of high-risk cervical cases, improving diagnostic accuracy and speed.
  • Large-Scale Screening Impact:
From June 2022 to December 2022, the system screened 44,385 samples, benefiting over 11,000 women.
  • Regional Standardization:
AI implementation unified screening standards across 17 regional hospitals, creating a consistent, data-driven workflow.
  • Smart Management:
Integrated digital reporting, cloud-based QC, and structured result analysis enabled systematic, automated cervical screening.

“The AI-assisted cervical cancer prevention platform greatly enhanced our screening efficiency and diagnostic accuracy.
It not only relieved the burden on cytology staff but also expanded access to early detection for local women.”
Dr. Liu Wen, Director of Pathology, Yancheng Maternity and Child Health Hospital

Outcome

Through its collaboration with KFBIO, Yancheng Maternity and Child Health Hospital established an AI-powered cervical cancer prevention ecosystem, combining automation, precision diagnosis, and regional scalability.
The project demonstrates how AI and digital pathology can drive large-scale public health initiatives and improve women’s health outcomes.
