A Historic Milestone: Launch of the Latin American Digital Pathology Association (ALPD)

By Published On: 11/19/2025

The digital transformation of pathology in Latin America has reached a significant milestone with the official creation of the Latin American Digital Pathology Association (ALPD). This landmark initiative, introduced during SLAP2025, marks the beginning of a unified regional effort to advance digital pathology, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate innovation across the continent.

A Regional Movement Gaining Momentum

Latin American countries have been making remarkable progress in the adoption of digital pathology. Yet many institutions continue to face similar challenges—ranging from infrastructure and workflow optimization to professional training and system interoperability.
The establishment of the ALPD creates a much-needed collaborative platform that brings together experts, laboratories, universities, and industry partners to address these challenges collectively. By fostering knowledge exchange and coordinated development, the association is expected to play a transformative role in the region’s healthcare landscape.

Leadership and Vision Behind ALPD

A special recognition goes to Dr. Andrés Mosquera Zamudio, MD, PhD(c), whose leadership through the Programa GLORIA has been central to guiding this initiative. His long-standing commitment to connecting and empowering the pathology community across Latin America has laid the foundation for the creation of the ALPD.
The formation of this association reflects the shared vision of enabling equitable access to high-quality diagnostic services and strengthening the digital capabilities of healthcare institutions in the region.

Digital Pathology: From Future to Reality

Digital pathology is rapidly becoming the new standard of practice. Whole slide imaging, AI-assisted diagnostics, and cloud-based collaboration platforms are transforming how pathologists work, communicate, and train.
These technologies open the door to faster diagnostics, improved efficiency, and broader access to specialist expertise—even in remote or underserved areas. The ALPD will play a key role in promoting these advancements and ensuring their sustainable and safe integration into routine practice.

Looking Ahead

The launch of the Latin American Digital Pathology Association is more than an event—it is the beginning of a new chapter for the region.
By strengthening collaboration, standardizing best practices, and accelerating the adoption of digital technologies, the ALPD will help shape the future of pathology across Latin America and beyond.
