Case Study: Henan Provincial People’s Hospital — Building a Fully Digital Pathology Department with KFBIO
Background
Henan Provincial People’s Hospital employs over 98 staff members in its pathology department and processes more than 400,000 slides annually.
As a key provincial center for complex and difficult pathology diagnosis, the hospital achieved CNAS certification in 2018, becoming one of only five pathology laboratories in China to hold this national accreditation.
“Digital pathology construction is an unstoppable trend. Scanners are essential, but AI integration will play an even greater role in advancing pathology digitalization.”
— Dr. Kong Lingfei, Director of Pathology Department
Project Overview
In collaboration with KFBIO and China Huayi Group, the hospital implemented a comprehensive digital pathology transformation project, building a fully digital diagnostic workflow and management platform that connects clinical, academic, and AI-assisted processes.
Key Achievements
1. Digital Slide Scanning Infrastructure
Installed four KFBIO digital slide scanners to digitize slides for external consultation, research, and multiple subspecialties.
The system supports over 1,000 slides scanned per day, significantly improving efficiency and image standardization.
2. Scalable Data Storage System
Deployed 1 PB of annual data storage capacity, with each digital slide averaging 250 MB.
This scalable infrastructure supports large-scale, high-resolution image archiving and long-term accessibility.
3. AI-Assisted Applications
Introduced AI diagnostic modules for:
- Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
- Gastric biopsy interpretation
- Slide quality control
These tools help reduce diagnostic workload and enhance accuracy and consistency.
4. Centralized Digital Pathology System
Built a unified digital pathology management system for slide scanning, data archiving, and quality control.
The platform integrates AI algorithms for case management, report generation, and diagnostic decision support, enhancing workflow automation and diagnostic reliability.
5. Regional Remote Consultation Platform
Established a provincial-level telepathology network, connecting 268 hospitals across Henan Province.
As of March 2023, the platform has completed 57,321 remote consultations, including 264 frozen sections and 172 cytology cases—enabling real-time collaboration and expanding diagnostic accessibility.
Outcome
Through its partnership with KFBIO, Henan Provincial People’s Hospital successfully transitioned to a fully digital, AI-driven pathology workflow, enabling:
- Rapid case digitization (1,000+ slides/day)
- Standardized data and QC management
- Regional remote consultation coverage
This project marks a significant step toward provincial-scale integration of smart pathology and high-quality diagnostic collaboration.
