Case Study: The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine — Building a Fully Digital Pathology Department with KFBIO
Background
The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (ZJU-2H) is one of China’s leading tertiary hospitals, ranking No. 8 nationwide in 2023.
Operating across six campuses, the hospital manages over 720,000 pathology cases annually and performs more than 1,300 digital slide scans per day.
To modernize its diagnostic workflows, ZJU-2H partnered with KFBIO to construct a comprehensive digital pathology ecosystem integrating multi-campus information management, AI-assisted diagnosis, and large-scale data storage.
“Through the integrated information and digital diagnosis system, pathologists can conduct remote consultations, reporting, and sign-offs anytime and anywhere, dramatically improving diagnostic efficiency.”
— Dr. Qiu Hong, Director of Pathology Department
Project Overview
The collaboration focused on building a unified digital platform that connects multiple hospital campuses, supporting data synchronization, AI analysis, and teaching functions.
This platform ensures real-time connectivity between diagnostic departments, enabling cross-campus remote consultation and AI-powered decision support.
Key Achievements
1. Multi-Campus Integration
All six hospital campuses are now connected through KFBIO’s pathology information management system, enabling unified scheduling, sample tracking, and remote collaboration.
Digital workflows allow seamless slide sharing between campuses, ensuring fast, coordinated diagnosis.
2. Comprehensive Digitalization of Chengdong Campus
The Chengdong Campus is equipped with four KFBIO high-throughput scanners, achieving fully digital diagnostic workflows across all pathology subspecialties.
3. Large-Scale Data Management
ZJU-2H established an advanced 1 PB /year hybrid storage architecture combining hot, warm, and cold storage tiers, enabling secure, distributed archiving of digital pathology slides and related metadata.
4. AI-Powered Diagnostic Applications
Through KFBIO’s AI research and diagnostic platform, ZJU-2H has introduced AI models for:
- Cervical cytology,
- Gastric tissue,
- Thyroid FNA, and
- Biopsy quality control.
These modules support automated lesion recognition, grading, and quality assurance, accelerating diagnosis and enhancing standardization.
Outcome
With KFBIO’s integrated digital pathology platform, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University has achieved:
- Full digital coverage across six campuses
- >1,300 slides scanned daily
- 1 PB annual data storage capacity
- AI models supporting multiple diagnostic domains
The hospital now operates a fully digital, intelligent pathology ecosystem that connects diagnosis, teaching, and research—becoming a model for regional smart healthcare transformation.
