Case Study: West China Hospital, Sichuan University — Building a Fully Digital and AI-Integrated Pathology Department with KFBIO
Background
West China Hospital, Sichuan University, ranks among China’s Top 2 comprehensive hospitals and houses one of the largest pathology departments in the country, with 50+ senior pathologists and an annual workload exceeding 400,000 slides.
To accelerate its transition to digital and intelligent pathology, the hospital partnered with KFBIO to establish an end-to-end digital pathology, data management, and AI-assisted diagnostic system.
Project Overview
The collaboration focused on upgrading the hospital’s core pathology workflow—covering digital slide scanning, remote consultation, full-process tracking, and big data management—while also enabling inter-hospital collaboration within the West China Medical Alliance.
Key Achievements
1. Comprehensive Digital Scanning Deployment
Installed 14 KFBIO digital slide scanners to digitize slides from external consultation cases, research projects, and multiple subspecialties, progressively expanding toward full-department digital diagnosis.
A 1 PB hybrid storage system was established to ensure secure and scalable long-term slide data management.
2. Remote Pathology Consultation Network
Built a telepathology consultation center covering 13 affiliated hospitals and regional partners, providing a seamless platform for inter-hospital collaboration, second opinions, and multi-disciplinary case discussions.
The system went live in 2022 and continues to expand its regional network reach.
3. Full-Process Information Management System
Developed a comprehensive sample tracking and quality control system at the Tianfu Campus, enabling unified management of samples, personnel, reagents, QC, and test workflows.
Unique modules were customized for sample traceability and molecular diagnosis, ensuring precision and standardization across all stages.
4. Big Data Management and AI Quality Control
Integrated an advanced big data platform that supports AI-based quality control for digital slides.
The system enables mass data analysis, storage optimization, and real-time AI quality evaluation, laying the foundation for research-oriented digital pathology.
