Case Study: How Zhongshan Hospital Built an AI-Powered Digital Pathology Platform | KFBIO
Background
Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, ranks among the Top 5 hospitals in China and serves as a National Medical Center.
To enhance efficiency and unify operations across its expanding regional network, the hospital partnered with KFBIO to develop an integrated smart pathology platform combining automation, digitalization, and regional management.
Project Overview
The project aims to establish a multi-campus, standardized digital pathology ecosystem, integrating data flow, quality control, reporting formats, and educational platforms under a single, intelligent management framework.
Currently, three hospital campuses have achieved complete digital unification with consistent workflow standards and centralized control.
Key Achievements
1. Full Workflow Automation and Digitalization
A unified “Automation + Digital + Smart + Regional Integration” model has been established.
Three campuses now operate under consistent workflows, user interfaces, and QC standards, ensuring standardized diagnosis, reporting, and teaching management.
2. Fully Electronic Requisition System
Zhongshan Hospital transformed its traditional paper-based requisition process into a fully electronic system, completing hospital-wide digital requisition management for all pathology cases.
3. Centralized Slide Management Platform
All scanned slides across pathology subspecialties are now managed within a unified system, linking each slide to its corresponding case.
Using AI-based QC, the digital platform automatically evaluates and monitors slide quality, significantly improving laboratory output consistency.
4. Research and AI Integration
A comprehensive AI research and analysis platform was established to perform molecular-level tissue evaluation, including AI-assisted image segmentation, classification, and subtype analysis, supporting translational and academic research.
5. Intelligent Diagnostic & QC Platform
A full-process AI-driven diagnostic and QC system monitors pathology workflow quality indicators in real time.
The system incorporates AI diagnostic modules for gastric and cervical cancers, supporting smart-assisted diagnosis and real-time performance tracking.
6. High-Speed Digital Slide Scanning Pipeline
Zhongshan Hospital pioneered a national-level ultra-high-speed slide scanning workflow, achieving a record of over 200 slides per hour per device—greatly enhancing throughput and digital conversion efficiency.
7. KFBIO Scanner Deployment
To support the large-scale digital transformation, the hospital deployed:
- 1×1200-slide high-throughput scanner
- 4×400-slide scanners
- 2×120-slide scanners
- 2×5-slide specialized scanners
This fleet enables both routine diagnostics and high-volume research digitization.
Outcome
By integrating KFBIO’s smart pathology solutions, Zhongshan Hospital has built an automated, data-driven, and regionally integrated pathology management system.
The platform now enables unified quality control, centralized data oversight, and multi-campus diagnostic collaboration—empowering precision medicine and data-based hospital governance.
